Question: I heard that the high school is going to a new schedule that will only allow the band to meet every other day. Is this true? If so, it will KILL the band program.
Response: There has not been a decision made regarding next year's schedule at the High School. The High School is exploring options due to the increased requirements brought about by the 4X4 curriculum requirement approved by the legislature for this year's freshman class.
Question: Why did Mr. Franklin have junior high math teachers review and recommend a math book and then choose the book that none of them recommended?
Response: The committee was formed to provide input. The ultimate decision was left to the Director of Curriculum and Instruction and the Superintendent. The program chosen provides for differentiated instruction which research has proven to be more effective. The standard book lends itself to more of a lecture style of teaching.
Question: On the 2008-2009 calendar, what does "Days in blue are for students at-risk" mean?
Response: MISD is participating in the optional flexible year program in '08-'09. This will allow students that passed or are expected to pass TAKS to get out of school ten days early. (For those in non-tested grades, the optional time off will be based on grade completion.) This will be an incentive for students to work hard throughout the year. For those students who did not, or are likely not, to perform successfully on TAKS, the 10 days will allow time for intensive, small-group instruction. Those students that passed or are expected to pass TAKS would have the option of coming to school on those last 10 days of the school year.
