Joining the Mavs in a new District 9-5A are Hallsville, Pine Tree, and Mt. Pleasant from the previous District 16-5A. Joining that group under the new alignment are Nacogdoches, Jacksonville, Whitehouse and Lindale.

The new alignment means that Marshall, the reigning football champion of the old District 16-5A, will play seven district games the next two seasons. Mavs athletic director/head football coach Claude Mathis said Thursday morning that Marshall has tentative agreements with Class 6A rivals Tyler Lee and Longview, as well as two-time defending Class 4A champion Carthage for the three non-district dates on the schedule.

For sports other than football, the realignment also causes a shakeup in the districts. Marshall basketball and volleyball teams will compete in a new-look District 16-5A that includes Hallsville, Jacksonville, Pine Tree, Lufkin, Nacogdoches, John Tyler and Whitehouse.

The 2018 football season will also mark the first time Class 5A districts are split into two divisions based on enrollment. The new District 9-5A will compete in the Division II Region 3 bracket of the playoffs. Gone from the previous district are Texas High, which will play in Class 5A Division I, and Sulphur Springs, which was moved to Region 2 District 8 in the D-2 division.

The remaining district alignments for other sports will be released in March, according to the UIL.
