Marshall High School serves as the only high school in the Marshall Independent School District in Marshall, Texas. MHS is home to approximately 150 staff members and 1,500 students and is the largest school district in Harrison County. A successful bond issue in 1976 led to the construction and opening of the current school in 1980. Savings from funds from the Legacy 2017 bond project in MISD, along with general fund balance and annual general fund budgeting, has allowed MHS to receive a facelift since 2017. Most notably, the entire building has been renovated with new lighting, new walls and new floor and ceiling tiles, along with a security entrance and new security doors. The science labs have been completely renovated and updated to current TEA standards, and all restrooms in the building have undergone a complete renovation. Maverick Gym has been renovated with a new gym floor and bleacher seating, and Maverick Stadium received a new artificial turf surface as well as new lighting and a new press box. Both the Maverick baseball and softball fields have also received artificial turf surfaces, and a new co-curricular, covered pavilion opened in the fall of 2020 for use by all MHS and MISD students and organizations. A new, on-campus Ag Barn is currently under construction and should be ready for use by students sometime in the 2021-2022 school year.

The project was part of the Legacy 2017 building program born out of the passage of a $109,200,000.00 bond issue approved by MISD voters in May 2015. The new school was constructed on the site of the old David Crockett Elementary, which was closed following the 2016-2017 school year. The old building was demolished following the completion of the new school in late summer 2017. The new Crockett was a consolidation of both the old Crockett and the old Robert E. The move across town to the old South Marshall Elementary building coincided with the district's decision to make the school a full-day pre-kindergarten campus for the first time in MISD history.
