The Marshall Independent School District proudly serves approximately 5,000 students in Marshall, Texas. The district was founded in 1898 with the creation of Marshall High School.

The district consists of seven campuses, including Marshall High School (grades 9-12) and Marshall Junior High School (grades 6-8). MISD has four elementary campuses serving students in grades K-5: David Crockett Elementary, Price T. Young Elementary, Sam Houston Elementary and William B. Travis Elementary. Sam Houston Elementary serves as the district's designated STEM (Science,Technology, Engineering,Math) campus.

Marshall Early Childhood Center serves as the district's PreK/Head Start campus, with Marshall Early Graduation School launching in the 2019-2020 school year as an early graduation charter school.

The district also includes a Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (DAEP) campus, located on Johnson Street north of MHS.

The district also includes Little Mav Academy, which is a full-day daycare/day school for children of MISD employees and students only with children ages six weeks to five years.

About MISDLOCATION

Marshall ISD is located in Marshall, Texas, in upper east Texas, 40 minutes from Shreveport, La., to the east and just over two hours from the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex to the west. Marshall is located at the intersection of three major highways -- Interstate 20 and State Highways 59 and 43. Historic Caddo Lake is located less than 20 minutes to the northeast of downtown Marshall, and the city is also just a short drive from Lake o' the Pines to the northwest.

Marshall has a population of just over 23,000, and serves as the county seat of Harrison County. The average home value in the district as of July 2014 was $74,486. Marshall ISD encompasses an area of approximately 346 square miles in and around Marshall.

SUPERINTENDENT

gibsonDr. Jerry Gibson serves as Marshall ISD's Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Gibson begins his fifth year as MISD Superintendent in 2020-2021 after having come to Marshall from Coldspring-Oakhurst ISD in the summer of 2016.Dr. Gibson earned a Bachelor of Science from East Texas Baptist University in 1993 with additional studies at Prairie View A&M University, Stephen F. Austin State University and Texas Southern University. He holds a Master of Education from Lamar University, and a Doctorate of Education in Professional Leadership from the University of Houston.

Prior to serving at Coldspring-Oakhurst, Dr. Gibson was Executive Director of Secondary Education in Waco ISD from 2011-2013. He served as Principal at Whitney High School in Whitney ISD and also as Principal at Deweyville High School in Deweyville ISD. He has also served as an Assistant Principal at Central Magnet High School in Beaumont ISD.

Dr. Gibson has worked as a teacher, coach and athletic director at multiple schools during his career, with experience teaching Social Studies, Behavioral Science, Health, Earth Science and Physical Education.

teaSCHOOL ACCOUNTABILITY

In the 2018-2019 school year, for the first time in 11 years, no Marshall ISD campus was rated as academically unacceptable or improvement required with data released in August 2019 by the Texas Education Agency.

Overall, the district received a “C” grade in the state’s new grade accountability system, but all campuses in MISD were rated as “Met Standard,” which is the highest possible ranking from TEA. The 2018-2019 ratings highlight a three-year period of growth in MISD. Entering the 2016-2017 school year, MISD had six of its then-11 campuses on the Improvement Required list. That number shrank to one in 2017 as the district entered its new Legacy 2017 facilities, and then ticked up slightly again last year with two schools on the IR list but only by a combined total of just 1 ½ points. Overall, MISD had one campus with an “A” grade (Sam Houston Elementary), three with “C” (William B. Travis Elementary, David Crockett Elementary, and Marshall High School); and two with “D” (Price T. Young Elementary, Marshall Junior High School), although those two campuses saw a combined 17 point-increase in their overall ratings.

The district was not rated along with all other schools in Texas for the 2019-2020 school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic which forced the closure of all schools in the state in the spring of 2020.

THE POWER FIVE

MISD has made tremendous strides academically due to the implementation of our “non-negotiables,” what we call “The Power Five” -- Power Walks, Data Rooms, Small Group Instruction, Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and “RPMs” (Reflective Practice Model):

• Campus administrators are required to complete 20 “power walks” per week to monitor classroom instruction
• Campuses are required to make use of “data rooms” to track student growth throughout the year.
• Small group instruction reduces student-teacher ratios and allows more specific, targeted and personalized instruction for each student.
• PLCs are a systematic process in which our teachers work together to analyze and improve classroom practice.
• RPMs allow communication and collaboration between campuses, as teachers and administrators together look and discuss TEKS and student work throughout the year.

MISD STEM PROGRAM

Marshall ISD opened its STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Academy at South Marshall Elementary in the fall of 2014. This was the beginning of a program that expanded to the new Marshall Junior High School beginning with the 2017-2018 school year. The opening of MISD’s Legacy 2017 elementary schools prompted the move of the K-5 STEM academy from South Marshall to a renovated Sam Houston Elementary School.

The purpose of Marshall ISD STEM program is to identify students who are interested in a STEM career and provide them with the information and instruction needed to succeed in the STEM field. Marshall ISD recognizes the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math necessary to compete in a 21st century workforce.

Today, humans are spending more time developing and interacting with technology. As an innovative school district, Marshall ISD understands the growing trends that are vital to increase engineering and technological literacy among all students. STEM harnesses children’s natural curiosity to promote learning Science, Technology, Engineering and Math concepts.

MISD AVID

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college-preparation program that is offered as an elective class to students at Marshall High School and Marshall Junior High School looking to prepare for entrance into a four-year college or university. The class is designed to help students acquire skills and behaviors they will need to do well and gain acceptance to four-year colleges and universities upon graduation from high school.

Students are taught study skills, note-taking, time management, organization, reading, writing, collaboration, and research skills, while learning about college and career options for the future. AVID students learn both in the classroom as well as outside of classroom through field trips to colleges, universities or other cultural sites. The elective class includes time for tutorial groups, where students receive help with material from their other academic classes. AVID recruits students who are motivated to do well and are willing to work hard to make success a reality, now and in the future.

athleticsMAVERICK ATHLETICS

The Marshall ISD Athletic Program is an integral part of the total school experience for both boys and girls. It offers a variety of sports and activities to all students who have potential skill and the desire to participate.

MISD sponsors the following sports available for student-athletes at Marshall Junior High and Marshall High School, grades 7-12: Football, Basketball, Baseball, Cross Country, Golf, Powerlifting, Soccer, Softball, Tennis, Track and Field, and Volleyball.

Overall objectives of the MISD Athletic Program are:
• Contribute to the development of the student-athlete;
• Encourage and promote academic success;
• Teach the practice of excellence in all we do;
• Teach self-discipline and commitment in all endeavors;
• Develop and teach ethical values;
• Develop a proper mental attitude
• Enjoy the experience

In the spring of 2019, MISD entered into an agreement with Under Armour and BSN Sports to provide official team and school apparel in a wide-ranging deal that makes MISD an official Under Armour community.

musicMISD FINE ARTS

Marshall ISD’s Fine Arts programs incorporate the study of dance, music, theatre and the visual arts to offer unique experiences and empower students to explore realities, relationships and ideas.

These disciplines engage and motivate all students through active learning, critical thinking, and innovative problem solving. The fine arts develop cognitive functioning and increase student academic achievement, higher-order thinking, communication, and collaboration skills, making the fine arts applicable to college readiness, career opportunities, workplace environments, social skills, and everyday life. Students develop aesthetic and cultural awareness through exploration, leading to creative expression. Creativity, encouraged through the study of the fine arts, is essential to nurture and develop the whole child.

Marshall ISD’s Fine Arts programs have a long history of success and have brought a tremendous amount of pride over the years to Marshall.

The “Big Red Pride” Maverick Band is a Sweepstakes-award winner, and the MISD Choir program has been a consistent source of pride and accomplishment for several generations of students who have earned Sweepstakes honors as a group and All-State recognition individually.

MISD’s Orchestra program continues to grow in both numbers and in honors, and the MHS Theatre Department has made tremendous strides over recent years to become a very solid contributor to the overall success of the Fine Arts department in MISD.

MARSHALL FFA ORGANIZATION


Marshall FFA’s goal is to empower students and ensure they are prepared for college and careers after high school. Through agriscience courses taught at Marshall High School, all students will have the ability to be successful in any career they plan to pursue after graduation.

Students may participate in many aspects of competition through Marshall FFA. Students have the options of showing livestock at local and major levels; participating in Career Development Events and Leadership Development Events and competitions; and attending conferences at the District, Area and State levels.

As of the 2018-2019 school year, Marshall FFA had grown in membership to one of the 10th largest organizations in the state of Texas.

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
In 2016, Marshall ISD committed to a renewed focus on early childhood education as a key cornerstone in the district’s academic turnaround efforts. This focus was based on three key areas: creating an environment that is conducive to fun, yet rigourous, hands-on literacy material; train teachers appropriately with the material; and to understand the purpose of building a community via care and logical consequences.

Since that time, MISD’s early childhood education program -- first at Washington Early Childhood Center and now, as of 2019, at Marshall Early Childhood Center -- has implemented a wide-ranging pre-kindergarten curriculum titled “Learning by Doing.” This new curriculum and approach to early childhood education has begun to produce phenomenal growth in students as they prepare to enter kindergarten.

The Learning By Doing program provides teachers with the training needed to understand concepts, create intentional lessons, present lessons in a meaningful manner that involves students’ interest while systematically presenting lessons that are integrated with literacy concepts. This intentional and methodical framework allows young students to engage and master literacy concepts in a simple to complex manner. There is a repetition of how lessons are presented, yet new literacy concepts are introduced so that students are able to master concepts at their own pace. Students are exposed to three letter sounds a day for ten days. Each day brings a new literacy concept and indirect integration of other content areas such as mathematics.

The 2018-2019 school year, the third under the Learning by Doing program as well as the final half-day format at Washington Early Childhood Center, saw tremendous gains. Data from the year’s benchmarks also show a tremendous increase in learning and overall reading skills in our pre-kindergarten students. Students tested early in the year in Rapid Vocabulary tested at 59 percent in the first benchmark, but tested at 80 percent in the third and final benchmark of the year, an increase of 21 points.

In Syllabication, students tested at 22 percent at the beginning of the year but improved to 72 percent, an increase of 50 points, after another year in the Learning By Doing curriculum. In Shape Naming, students began the year at 45 percent but improved to 82 percent, a 37-point jump, by the end of the year. By any standard of measurement, that is an impressive school year in terms of student achievement and learning at our early childhood campus.

MISD expects these impressive gains to only grow considering the fact that in 2019-2020, with the move to the old South Marshall Elementary campus, the district is able to expand to a full-day early childhood school rather than the old half-day format at the former WECC.

LITTLE MAV ACADEMY: Little Mav Academy is a full-day daycare/preschool facility within the Marshall Independent School District specifically to serve children ages 6 weeks to 5 years of MISD employees and students only. Little Mav Academy opened in August 2018 and is located in the new wing of the old South Marshall Elementary School on Meadows Street, sharing a campus with Marshall Early Childhood Center.

Little Mav Academy is a licensed facility that follows regulations established by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. LMA is a part of MISD and operates in accordance with the MISD calendar. The monthly cost is nominal for employees of the district in comparison to similar facilities, and the service is free for children of MISD students. Another attraction is that there are no fees charged for when the district is closed and employees are on holiday breaks.

At Little Mav Academy, we believe that a balance of a structured learning environment coupled with play and discovery are the best learning methods for early childhood practices. We value our roles as early childhood educators and understand that it is our position to touch and inspire the lives of children and their family members as well as the community we serve.

LMA Infant and Toddler classes learn via curriculum from Frog Street Press, while Preschool classes use Learning by Doing, the same curriculum used by students at Marshall Early Childhood Center.
