TSIA Information

What is the TSIA?

The Texas Success Initiative Assessment 2.0 (TSIA2) is a series of placement tests for students enrolling in public colleges and universities in Texas. The tests help Texas schools determine whether you’re ready for college-level courses in the areas of reading, writing, and math.

If you’re not ready for college-level courses, the tests help determine what types of courses or intervention will best prepare you for college-level work. You take TSIA2 tests on a computer and, depending on school policy, may get your results immediately after you finish the test.

About the TSIA Assessment

Students who need to show college readiness in English language arts and mathematics will take the TSI Assessment. The TSI Assessment (TSIA2) is aligned to the Texas College and Career Readiness Standards. It offers both placement testing as well as detailed diagnostic profiles of students’ college readiness and/or adult basic education levels. If you do not know whether you need to take this test, please ask staff at the Student Services desk in the Administrative Services Building for a Referral for Testing form.

Testing Time

The TSI Assessment is an untimed test. The test publisher estimates that most students will take about four hours to take both sections.

Cost

The cost for the TSIA2 is $15 for the whole test or $10 for just math.

Scores

Scores are usually available immediately after testing. Sometimes the essay score is delayed, and a complete score report is available on the next business day. The scores that indicate college readiness are:

ELAR

A score of 945 or higher with an essay score of 5 or higher.

OR

A score of 944 or lower with a diagnostic score of 5 or higher AND an essay score of 5 or higher.

Math

A score of 950 or higher.

OR

A score of 949 or lower with a diagnostic score of 6.

A high school student is waived from taking TSI Assessment and eligible for 11th or 12th grade Dual Credit enrollment by meeting one the requirements below:

  • SAT: If the test date is after 3/5/16, a student has an SAT score of 480 or higher critical reading and 530 or higher on the math portions of the test. Test score must be less than 5 years old and achieved in one sitting.

  • ACT: A student has an ACT composite score of 23 with a minimum of 19 in both the math and English portions of the test. Scores must be less than 5 years old and achieved in one sitting.

  • PSAT/NMSQT: PSAT/NMSQT combined score of 107 (achieved by adding the math and critical reading scores) with a minimum of 50 on the critical reading and/or mathematics test(s) relevant to the courses to be attempted.
