MHS Mavettes

In the Fall the Marshall Mavettes drill team perform at Varsity football games accompanied by the Big Red Pride Band of Marshall High School. The Mavettes also attend contests in the winter, as well as put on a Spring Show in April.

Founded in 1969 by Mrs. Charlsie Cooke, the Marshall Mavettes represent MHS and the community of Marshall. The Mavettes are known for their high kicks and red lips. Ms. Cooke directed the Mavettes for 15 years before retiring, and the team has seen a total of 14 directors over the ensuing 35 years. But one thing that has not changed is the commitment of working toward being one of the most-recognized high school drill teams in the state. As the yearbook entry states, coming off the much larger pep squad, there were just over 100 young ladies in the very first squad of Mavettes in 1969. In 2022, the team consists of 38 Mavettes, which includes 33 line members and five officers.

The Marshall Mavettes drill team is under the direction of Mrs. Heather Hill and Ms. Rebeckah Markum.

Mrs. Hill was a Marshall Mavette herself from 2008-2011 where she served as Junior Lieutenant, and Captain her senior year. She rejoined her Mavette family as Head Director in the fall of 2016 after graduating from the University of Texas in 2015. Mrs. Hill is married to her High School sweetheart Garrett Hill, and they share a beautiful daughter named Meg. Mrs. Hill strives for teamwork, perseverance, mutual respect, and attention to detail with the Mavettes. Her expectations long-term would be that we continue to strive for excellence in both character and performance. As well as that the team would continue to experiment with new styles of dance.

Ms. Markum was a Bobcat Belle for Hallsville ISD from 2009-2012 where she served as Sr. Lieutenant. From 2013-2015 Ms. Markum was part of the 67th line of the Internationally Famous Tyler Junior College Apache Belles. She graduated from the University of Texas at Tyler in 2020. Going on their 13th year she is with her High School sweetheart Matthew Gibbs. Ms. Markum joined the Maverick family in the fall of 2022 as the Dance Teacher for the High School, and the Assistant Director of the Mavettes. Ms. Markum is excited for her future at MISD, and to watch her students grow.
