Principal Johnson

Welcome to William B. Travis Elementary!

Hello!

I’m Tamekia Johnson, proud Principal of William B. Travis Elementary. With a deep-rooted passion for education and over two decades of experience in public schools, I am honored to lead a campus where every child is valued, challenged, and supported.

My journey began in East Texas, where I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from Texas College in 2001. I later pursued a Master’s of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Texas at Tyler and a Master’s of Education in Educational Leadership from Grand Canyon University. In 2011, I completed my Principal Certification through Lamar University.

Throughout my career, I’ve served in a variety of roles—including classroom teacher, team leader, assistant principal, and principal—in districts across East Texas such as Tyler ISD, Longview ISD, and Marshall ISD. These experiences have strengthened my commitment to instructional leadership, equity in education, and fostering a school culture that empowers all learners.

At William B. Travis, we believe in the power of community, culturally responsive practices, and high expectations for every student. I am dedicated to building strong relationships with families, staff, and community partners as we work together to ensure academic excellence and a safe, welcoming environment for all.

Outside of school, I enjoy being active in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., serving at Ward Chapel AME Church, and supporting the work of the Texas State Teachers Association.

It’s a true joy to be part of the WBT family, and I look forward to all we will accomplish together. I invite you to visit our campus and experience the energy, excellence, and enthusiasm that make William B. Travis Elementary a great place to learn and grow.

Warmly,
Tamekia Johnson
