Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID)

Marshall ISD is proud to implement the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) College Readiness System across grades K–12, supporting students in developing the skills, habits, and mindset needed for academic success and postsecondary opportunities.

At the elementary level, students are introduced to AVID strategies, which focus on building foundational skills such as organization, study habits, collaboration, and critical thinking. These strategies help prepare students for the rigorous coursework and expectations they will encounter in middle and high school.

At Marshall Junior High and Marshall High School, AVID is offered as an elective course for students seeking to prepare for entrance into four-year colleges and universities. The elective provides students with instruction in:

  • Study skills and time management

  • Note-taking and organizational strategies

  • Reading, writing, research, and collaboration skills

  • College and career awareness

Students in AVID elective classes also participate in tutorial groups to receive academic support in other subjects and have opportunities to engage in college and cultural experiences, including field trips to universities and other learning sites. AVID recruits students who are motivated, willing to work hard, and committed to achieving academic success both now and in the future.
