Leaves and Absences

Marshall ISD understands that there are times when employees may need to take an extended leave of absence due to personal, medical, or family-related circumstances. To support our staff during such times, the district offers various types of leave options designed to accommodate extended absences.

Please note, all Leaves are unpaid unless employee chooses to use their Paid Time Off (PTO).

Medical Leaves

  • Family Medical Leave (FMLA)

    • Intermittent or Continuous

      • Employees with a minimum of 12 months of service with the district, who have worked at least 1,250 hours in the 12-month period prior to the first day of leave.

      • Employee’s serious health condition that makes him/her unable to perform one or more essential job functions (including pregnancy)

      • Birth or care for newborn, adopted child, or a child placed for foster care

      • Care for the employee’s spouse, child, or parent with a serious health condition

      • Qualifying exigency (i.e. short-notice deployment, military events, and related activities)

      • Care for an injured, next-of-kin service member

  • Temporary Disability Leave

    • Educator Certified

      • Any full-time employee whose position requires educator certification who are not eligible for FMLA or who have exhausted FMLA shall be eligible for temporary disability leave (substitutes and temporary employees are not eligible)

      • Employee’s serious health condition (including pregnancy)

      • Must provide medical certification

  • Workers Compensation

    • All employees who suffer a work-related illness or who are injured on the job

    • Must inform supervisor, nurse or designee immediately

    • Must contact benefits department if absence exceeds three days

  • Sick Leave Bank

    • Membership requires the donation of 1 Local day ANNUALLY during enrollment period or 30 days within hire.

    • Only eligible for Sick Leave Bank Members.

    • The purpose of the Sick Leave Bank is to provide additional sick leave days to a member of the Bank in the event of critical illness, medically necessary surgery (non‐elective), or a temporary disability due to an injury which renders him/her unable to perform the duties of his/her position.

    • In special cases, sick leave bank days may be granted for use with the illness of a family member.

    • Days may be requested from the Bank only after the member has exhausted all available paid leave, including all accumulated state and local sick leave days, state personal leave days, and vacation days, if any.

Other Leaves and Time Off

  • Bereavement Leave

    • Bereavement leave of up to three days may be granted for the death of an immediate family member.

    • The Bereavement days do not have to be taken consecutively.

    • Such leave shall be taken with no loss of pay or other paid leave.

    • Employees enter their time off in Skyward and Frontline as usual.

    • The employee submits the required obituary or notice from a funeral director to the campus secretary who will forward to the Leaves and Benefits office and the personal approved time off will be reclassified as paid Bereavement Leave.

  • Jury Duty

    • Employees will receive leave with pay and without loss of accumulated leave for jury duty.

    • Employees MUST present documentation of attendance and may keep any compensation they receive.

    • An employee is required to report back to work if dismissed before 11:00 am from jury duty. MISD may consider the travel time required and the nature of the individual’s position when determining the need to report to work.

  • School Business Leave

    • A time off request for School Business leave should be submitted for approval in Skyward and AESOP along with documentation of the activity.

    • Requesting to be absent to attend a workshop or other professional development activity or accompanying students on an approved trip.

  • Military (other than reserves)

    • Active military duty in any branch of the United States or state military armed services during periods of wartime or authorized training or duty.

    • Authorized military order is required.
